Being Web Smart 1

Yesterday, I went to a USF Advertising Club meeting for extra credit but left with much more. I expected to sit through the same schpeel about the importance of engaging in social media as a future communications professional but was delightfully surprised to hear a lecture that was both refreshing and inspirational. The guest speaker was Julia Gorzka, a social media strategist, who shed light on aspects of social media that I failed to notice.

Many of my blog posts are on celebrities and companies but Julia pointed out that every internet user has his or her own ‘brand’ or ‘digital footprint’ as well. I created a logo to give my website a personal touch but I never thought of myself as a brand until Julia’s speech. Upon the discovery, I was enlightened but simultaneously self-conscious.

We currently live in an age where not only is it important to put your best foot forward in a job interview but in your online presence as well. Many employers have openly stated that they Google potential job candidates prior to the interview process. Although it may seem like there can only be negative outcomes to companies conducting research on applicants, it can also be beneficial. If you positively represent yourself, there is nothing to be afraid of. There have been numerous success stories that have resulted from students intelligently utilizing the internet.

In addition to book smarts and street smarts, there are web smarts. I’ve realized not only the importance of engaging in social media, but the importance of engaging strategically. Many communications students will eventually learn the concept of self-branding but I am fortunate to have heard Julia’s lecture early on. Expect minor changes to my website and social networking sites as I tweak my digital footprint and reinvent my brand. Luckily, I did away with my ‘princessdiva4life’ email address a decade ago, so I don’t need much improvement but I do plan to continue growing online as I mature in life.
